How to Embed a Simulation in Your LMS
Updated 2026-10-02
When you embed a simulation in your LMS, students open the course page and the experiment is already there: no new tab, no login, no hunting for a link. This guide shows you how to embed a simulation in your LMS or class website with Simulic, when a plain link or a QR code is the better choice, what each line of the embed code does, and how to fix the three problems teachers run into most often. At the end you will find short notes for nine platforms, with links to the step-by-step guides.
Link, embed or QR code: which one to use
Every share link in Simulic gives you all three, so you never have to decide up front. Pick the one that fits the moment.
| Option | Best for | What students get |
|---|---|---|
Play link (simulic.com/p/…) |
Google Classroom, Teams posts, email, homework | The simulation full screen on any device |
Embed code (simulic.com/e/…) |
Canvas, Moodle, Schoology, Brightspace, Google Sites, WordPress | The simulation inside your course page, next to your instructions |
| QR code | Live lessons, printed worksheets, lab stations | Phones and tablets open the play link in one scan |
A few rules of thumb from my own classes:
- Embed when the simulation belongs to a page you have written: a lab sheet, a reading, a unit overview. Students keep your instructions in view while they experiment.
- Link when the platform has no embed option, or when students work on small screens. A plain play link opens full screen on any device, which beats a cramped frame on a phone.
- QR code when you teach live. Project the simulation, show the code, and students follow along on their own devices.
All three point to the same share link, so play counts and student answers end up in one place.
What you need
- A free Simulic teacher account. Students never need one.
- A simulation from the library, or one you made yourself (see how to create a simulation for your lesson with AI).
- Edit rights on the course page where the simulation will go.
- For some platforms, an editor that accepts HTML. If yours removes iframes, your administrator has to allow them (more on that below).
Share links, QR codes and embeds are free, with no limit on the number of students.
Get the play link or embed code
- Open the simulation page and click Share. This opens the Share page for that simulation.
- On the Simulation tab, set the starting values you want students to see, for example a launch angle of 45° and an initial speed of 20 m/s. The current settings are pinned to the new link.
- Go to the Share Links tab. Under New link, give the link a name such as "Grade 9 · Period 3", choose the Language, and click Create link.
- In the link card, click Copy link for the play link, or open Embed code and click Copy embed code.
Make one link per class. Each link counts its own plays and keeps its own answers, and you can turn one class's link off without touching the others. Duplicate copies a link with the same language and settings, without the answers.
What's inside the embed code
Here is what you paste, with CODE standing for your link's code:
<iframe src="https://simulic.com/e/CODE" width="100%" height="640" allow="fullscreen" style="border:0" title="Projectile motion – trajectory and air resistance"></iframe>
<script src="https://simulic.com/static/js/embed.js" async></script>
<p>Simulation by <a href="https://simulic.com">Simulic</a></p>
Line by line:
- The iframe is the frame that shows the simulation.
width="100%"fills the width of your page column.height="640"is the starting height in pixels.allow="fullscreen"lets students switch to full screen from inside the frame.titlenames the frame for screen readers. - The script is optional. If you attached questions to the link, the content below the simulation grows as students answer, and the script makes the frame grow with it, so students never scroll inside a box. It only changes the frame's height. It does not read or send anything else.
- The credit line is a normal paragraph. Keep it or delete it.
Many learning platforms strip <script> tags for security. That is fine: the simulation still works, and the frame simply stays 640 px tall. If you attached questions and students have to scroll inside the frame, change height="640" to something like 900 before you paste.
The embed sets no cookies and students do not log in inside it. Plenty of embedded tools break when Safari or Chrome blocks third-party cookies, because they need a login session inside the frame. A Simulic embed keeps working in private windows and on locked-down school devices.
Try what your students will see
This is the same projectile motion simulation, embedded the same way it would appear on your course page. On the Intro screen, set the launch angle to 45°, the initial speed to 20 m/s and the launch height to 0, then fire. The range should come out at about 40.8 m, the maximum height about 10.2 m and the time of flight about 2.9 s. Switch to the Air Resistance screen, turn drag on, and the same launch falls short.
Numbers like these make good questions. "What is the range?" with the answer 40.8 m ± 0.5 is a number question Simulic can check automatically.
Platform-by-platform notes
Menu names below were correct at the time of writing. Platforms rename menus from one version to the next, so if a label looks slightly different on your screen, look for the closest match. The in-app embed help page keeps the current short version of each.
Google Classroom
Classroom does not accept embed codes. Use the Google Classroom button on the Share page, or add the play link as material or to an assignment. Full walkthrough: add an interactive simulation to Google Classroom.
Canvas
In a page or assignment, open the editor, choose Insert → Embed, paste the embed code and save. Full walkthrough: embed a simulation in Canvas LMS.
Moodle
Add a Page or a Text and media area, switch the editor to its HTML (source code) view, paste the embed code and save. If nothing appears, your administrator must allow iframes in the editor. Full walkthrough: embed a simulation in Moodle.
Microsoft Teams
Use the Microsoft Teams button on the Share page, or add the play link to an assignment or as a Website tab in your class team.
Google Sites
Choose Insert → Embed → Embed code and paste the code. Google Sites shows it in its own box: drag the box to set the height, because Sites does not run the resize script.
Schoology
Add a Page, choose Insert Content → Embed, paste the embed code and save.
Brightspace (D2L)
Create a file or HTML page, choose Insert Stuff → Enter Embed Code, paste the code and save. Brightspace resizes the frame on its own.
WordPress
Paste the embed code into a Custom HTML block. Or paste the play link on its own line: Simulic supports oEmbed, so WordPress can turn the link into an embed for you.
Notion
Paste the play link and choose Create embed, or type /embed and paste the link.
Add questions to the embedded simulation
An embed shows whatever the share link shows, including questions. On the Questions tab of the Share page you build a question set: up to 5 questions (short text, multiple choice or number) plus up to 3 prediction questions that students answer before the simulation unlocks. Pick the set for the link and it appears below the simulation, inside the frame. Students type a nickname and answer; you see the results on the link card and can download a CSV.
Simulic does not send scores to your LMS gradebook. If you would rather grade inside your platform's own quiz tool, see how to add simulations to quiz questions. For ideas on what to ask, read using simulations for formative assessment.
Troubleshooting
The frame is blank or shows a message
- "This Simulic link is no longer available" means the link is turned off. Open the Share page and click Turn on link.
- "This Simulic link has expired" means the link had a last day set (a Pro option). Change or clear the date in Options.
- A completely empty box usually means the platform removed the iframe when you saved. Open the page in the editor's HTML view: if the
<iframe>line is gone, see the next point. - If the frame is empty only on school devices, a web filter may be blocking simulic.com. Ask IT to allow it.
The editor removes the iframe when I save
Some platforms only allow iframes for trusted users or approved sites. Ask your administrator to allow iframes from simulic.com in the editor. Until then, post the play link instead: it does the same job in a new tab.
The simulation is cut off at the bottom
Your platform stripped the resize script, so the frame stays at 640 px. Edit the code and raise height="640" to 800–1000, depending on how many questions you attached. On Google Sites, drag the embed box taller instead.
FAQ
Do students need an account to use an embedded simulation?
No. Students open your course page and the simulation runs. If you attached questions, they type a nickname and answer. No sign-up, no email.
Does the embed work if the browser blocks third-party cookies?
Yes. The embed sets no cookies and needs no login inside the frame, so blocking third-party cookies does not affect it.
Can I use one embed code for several classes?
You can, but one link per class is better: each link keeps its own answers and play count, and several links can share the same question set.
Why is my embedded simulation only 640 pixels tall?
Your platform removed the optional resize script. Change height="640" in the embed code to a larger number, or drag the box on Google Sites.
Can I embed a simulation I made with AI?
Yes. Simulations you create or remix have the same Share page, links, QR codes and embed codes as library simulations.
