Fire hundreds of projectiles from a cannon with randomly varying angle and speed to build a data set of ranges, then group it into a frequency table and a stacked histogram. Four screens: Variability (fire once, rapid or continuous, adjust the spread in angle and speed), Sources (three cannons with different spreads), Measures (grouped frequency table, mean, median, quartiles and mode from the interpolation formulas for grouped data, compared with the raw data, plus an interval tool) and Sampling (the distribution of sample means, with standard deviation σ/√n). Adapted from the "Projectile Data Lab" simulation by PhET Interactive Simulations, University of Colorado Boulder (CC BY 4.0); rewritten.

Lesson: Mean, median and mode of grouped data

How to use

Parameters you can change

  • Screen Variability, Sources, Measures, Sampling
  • Random seed (same seed, same data) 1–99
  • Source (Sources, Measures, Sampling) Cannon A (long barrel, small spread), Cannon B (standard), Cannon C (old, large spread)
  • Class width h 1 m, 2 m, 5 m
  • Sample size n (Sampling) 2, 4, 9, 16, 25
  • Standard deviation of angle (Variability) 0–6 °
  • Standard deviation of speed (Variability) 0–1.5 m/s
  • Show mean x̄
  • Show standard deviation s
